The Republic of Moldova is entering a new era of infrastructure and economic development, and the upcoming tender for the expansion of the “Eugen Doga” International Airport in Chişinău is a significant part of this transformation.
Valued at MDL 700 million (approximately £35 million), this ambitious project aims not just to modernise Moldova’s primary airport, but to position it as a regional hub for business, trade, and tourism. With the tender set to be launched shortly, British businesses in construction, architecture, smart technologies, and aviation services are encouraged to explore this unique opportunity to participate in Moldova’s infrastructural evolution.
A Next-Generation Airport for Moldova
This project is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about experience, technology, and connectivity. The airport expansion will include:
- A significant extension of the passenger terminal
- Reorganised and modernised check-in and baggage zones
- New, spacious departure lounges
- Introduction of cutting-edge technologies such as:
- ABC gates (automated passport control)
- Fast Track corridors for business travellers
- Smart baggage processing systems with self-service features
Additionally, the new terminal design will include:
- A covered terrace for travellers to relax
- Showers and private pods for long-haul passengers
- An expanded business lounge
- Enhanced self-service check-in kiosks and digital signage
The completion of these upgrades is targeted for end of 2026, with construction work beginning later this year, immediately after the winning bidder is selected via public tender.
Who’s Behind the Project?
The airport is operated by the state and falls under the management of the Agency for Public Property (APP). The design and development are being coordinated by the Organisation for Land Planning, Urbanism, Construction and Housing (OATUCL), at the direct request of the airport authorities.
The project was officially presented to the public on 4 August 2025, during a press conference hosted by the airport, APP, and OATUCL. This signals a transparent and internationally welcoming approach to procurement—an ideal climate for UK firms with proven expertise in airport design, construction, systems integration, and sustainability.
Importantly, the project will be funded entirely through the airport’s own revenues. And those revenues tell a compelling story:
- 2022: MDL 2.6 million (~£130k)
- 2023: MDL 211 million (~£10.5m ) (an 80-fold increase)
- 2024: MDL 337 million (~£17m) – the highest in the airport’s history
This financial leap underpins confidence in the airport’s long-term viability and strong growth trajectory.
How This Project Benefits Travellers
Whether you’re a frequent flyer, occasional tourist, or corporate road warrior, the expansion of the “Eugen Doga” International Airport promises a much-improved experience.
For leisure passengers:
- Easier and faster check-in and baggage handling
- Access to modern, comfortable waiting areas
- Showers and relaxation zones for long layovers or delays
- A new terrace for enjoying fresh air before departure
For business travellers:
- Fast Track access and reduced waiting times
- Enhanced business lounge facilities for meetings or working in transit
- Efficient digital services for smoother workflows
These upgrades aren’t just cosmetic – they’re designed to support the pace of international business travel, placing Chişinău on par with other regional airports in terms of quality and user experience.
What This Means for International Trade
A modernised airport is a powerful tool for national development, especially in a landlocked country like Moldova. The expansion of “Eugen Doga” International Airport has the potential to:
- Boost bilateral trade by improving logistics and cargo flow
- Support international investments by demonstrating Moldova’s readiness for global engagement
- Facilitate high-level business missions and delegations
- Encourage the growth of Moldova’s export and service sectors, particularly in tech, textiles, agriculture, and light manufacturing
- Attract multinational businesses seeking regional HQs or low-cost, high-skill outsourcing centres
With faster, smarter airport operations, Moldova will be better equipped to support frequent, secure, and efficient travel for business leaders, government officials, investors, and exporters.
Why UK Companies Should Pay Attention
Moldova’s commitment to modernisation, transparency, and EU alignment makes it an increasingly attractive partner for UK businesses. This is especially true following Moldova’s intensified diplomatic engagement with the UK, including high-level meetings in 2025 between:
- President Maia Sandu
- HM King Charles III
- UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer
These diplomatic exchanges reaffirm the UK’s long-term strategic interest in Moldova, making the airport tender part of a broader narrative of mutual investment and economic collaboration.
