On 24 June 2025, both Moldova and Romania celebrated one of the most cherished cultural events of the year — Ziua Iei, also known as National Romanian Blouse Day. Recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the day honours the iconic ie — the traditional Romanian blouse — and the values it embodies: identity, craftsmanship, resilience, and continuity.
This year’s celebration held an especially meaningful tone in the United Kingdom, where members of the Moldovan and Romanian diaspora gathered in Manchester to mark the occasion. I had the honour and privilege to attend this beautiful event following an official invitation from the Consulate of Romania in Manchester. What I experienced was far more than a cultural showcase; it was a living expression of unity and mutual respect between two nations with shared roots and intertwined futures.
A Living Heritage on Display
The event brought together people from all walks of life — professionals, community leaders, artists, and families — united by a common heritage and the desire to preserve it. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the fashion show, which featured an extraordinary display of blouses from various regions of Romania. Each ie told a unique story through its embroidery, design, and colour palette — revealing symbols passed down through generations, rich in regional specificity and cultural meaning.

From the rolling hills of Transylvania to the traditions of Bucovina and the villages of Moldova and Muntenia, the blouses represented a living archive of history and identity. It was both inspiring and humbling to witness how these hand-crafted garments continue to be treasured and worn with pride, even thousands of miles from home.
A Consul Who Leads by Example

What truly elevated the event, however, was the personal participation of Nicoleta Teodorovici, the Consul General of Romania in Manchester. In a deeply touching gesture, she herself took part in the fashion show, wearing a traditional blouse from her native region. It was a moment that moved everyone present — not just because of the beauty of the blouse, but because it represented leadership grounded in cultural pride and authenticity.
Her presence and engagement were more than ceremonial; they were a reminder that diplomacy also lives in the cultural gestures that bring people together. It was an act of cultural diplomacy at its finest — authentic, personal, and powerful.
MDBA and the Consulate – A Model Partnership
This celebration would not have been the same without the incredible collaboration between the Moldovan Diaspora Business Alliance (MDBA) and the Consulate of Romania in Manchester. Over the years, this partnership has become a model of how institutions can work together in the service of community, culture, and international cooperation.

At a time when both Romania and Moldova are navigating complex global challenges, the bond between our nations has never been more important. Romania continues to be Moldova’s greatest advocate on the international stage, especially in our efforts to join the European Union. We are deeply grateful for the continuous support, friendship, and shared vision.
Our collaboration here in the UK reflects this broader alliance. Whether it’s through cultural events, joint advocacy, or support for diaspora-led initiatives, we are stronger together.
Standing United in a Changing World
We live in times when our democratic institutions are being tested — from within and without. Foreign interference, disinformation campaigns, and geopolitical instability are threats that affect both of our countries. In such times, culture becomes not just a celebration, but a tool for resilience.
By standing together, Romania and Moldova send a message of unity and determination. We defend our shared democratic values not just through policies and diplomacy, but also through acts of cultural solidarity like this one. Events like Ziua Iei reinforce our identity and remind us who we are — and why that matters.
More Than a Blouse
The Romanian blouse is far more than a garment. It is a canvas of history, woven with care by generations of women. It speaks of community, strength, and continuity. To wear the ie is to honour those who came before us — and to pass on the legacy to those who will follow.

The celebration of Ziua Iei in Manchester was not just a nod to tradition; it was a reaffirmation of who we are as people, as cultures, and as neighbours. It was a vibrant reminder that our stories continue to live and thrive, wherever we are in the world.
Gratitude and a Call to Action
I extend my sincere thanks to the Romanian Consulate in Manchester for their invitation, warmth, and leadership. Thank you also to everyone who helped organise this moving celebration.
Let us continue to build bridges through culture, foster cooperation through community, and champion our shared identity in everything we do. These traditions are the threads that bind us — and together, we will continue to weave a brighter future.
We encourage you to join our newsletter to be kept informed about any events that MDBA is organising and that could be of interest to you.
