On 17th of December, 2024, I had the distinct honour of attending the launch of the direct flight route between Manchester and Chisinau at Manchester International Airport. This event marked a significant milestone in my professional journey, as well as in the broader efforts to enhance connections between the United Kingdom and Moldova. Having personally worked on this project since 2008, the realisation of this route was nothing short of jubilant. It represents the culmination of years of advocacy, collaboration, and determination—not only for myself but also for the Moldovan community in the UK.
A Personal Journey of Advocacy
As a Moldovan businesswoman in the UK – I am the CEO of Express Language Solutions, the Salford President of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and the Chair of the Moldovan Diaspora Business Alliance – the establishment of this direct route has been a long-standing goal. When I began lobbying for this project over a decade ago, it was a vision of connecting Moldovans living in the UK with their homeland more efficiently. This vision gradually expanded to encompass broader objectives, including fostering bi-lateral trade, boosting tourism, and strengthening cultural ties.
This year, the project gained remarkable momentum. The signing of the bi-lateral Air Traffic Agreement at the start of 2024 set the stage for tangible progress. In March, I had the privilege of hosting His Excellency Ruslan Bolbocean, the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the UK, during a pivotal meeting with Manchester Airport representatives. His support during this meeting was invaluable and added weight to our efforts. Subsequently, an online petition was launched, gathering signatures from the Moldovan Diaspora, further demonstrating the demand and enthusiasm for this route.
Collaboration Across Borders
In May 2024, a significant online meeting took place between representatives of Manchester Airport and Chisinau International Airport. This meeting laid the groundwork for operational discussions. On May 31, 2024, another key milestone was reached during one of my conference calls that included representatives from Fly One, the airline now operating this route. It was during this call that the decision to launch the route was finalised. Remarkably, tickets were made available for purchase just days after this pivotal meeting.
These collaborative efforts highlight the power of partnerships in achieving meaningful progress. The combined support of Moldovan and UK stakeholders—government officials, airport authorities, airlines, and the Moldovan Diaspora—ensured the success of this initiative.
A Community United in Celebration
The Moldovan Diaspora in the UK has welcomed this route with overwhelming enthusiasm. Covering a catchment area that spans from Birmingham to Scotland, this route is poised to serve a significant portion of the Moldovan community. Social media channels have been abuzz with messages from Diaspora members, including those from as far as Northampton, expressing their excitement about the new travel option. This response underscores the profound impact this route will have on the lives of countless individuals.
For Moldovans, this direct connection signifies more than convenience. It represents an opportunity to visit family and friends more frequently, to maintain strong cultural ties, and to preserve a sense of belonging to their homeland. The emotional and practical benefits of this route cannot be overstated.
Boosting Trade and Business Opportunities
Beyond personal connections, the Manchester-Chisinau route holds immense potential for strengthening bi-lateral trade between the UK and Moldova. As Salford President of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, I am deeply committed to promoting international trade. This new route offers a streamlined avenue for businesses to explore opportunities in Moldova and vice versa.
Discussions are already underway to organise a trade mission from the UK to Moldova, allowing British businesses to scope out potential partnerships and investments. Likewise, a reciprocal trade mission from Moldova to the UK is expected to follow. These initiatives will pave the way for increased collaboration, knowledge exchange, and economic growth for both nations.
The direct flight also addresses logistical challenges, enabling faster and more efficient transport of goods between the two countries. Businesses engaged in import-export activities will benefit from reduced travel times, improved cargo handling, and enhanced connectivity. This development is a game-changer for companies looking to expand their operations internationally.
Unveiling Moldova to Leisure Travelers
While the business implications are significant, the new route also opens doors for leisure travellers to discover Moldova’s unique charm. Often referred to as Eastern Europe’s hidden gem, Moldova boasts picturesque landscapes, rich history, and a burgeoning wine industry. For UK travellers seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations, Chisinau offers an authentic and memorable experience.
The launch of this route will undoubtedly contribute to Moldova’s growing tourism sector, bringing increased visibility to its attractions and fostering cultural exchange. It provides an excellent opportunity for British travellers to explore a lesser-known destination while supporting Moldova’s local economy.
